Most shops that work on MINIs work on everything else too. We don’t. Cooper & Bimmer Experts has been working on cars for over 34 years, and MINI Cooper and BMW is all we do. When your Cooper comes in, it goes to a technician who has had that exact engine apart before — not to whoever happens to be free.
Why MINI owners bring us their cars
We only work on MINI and BMW
A MINI isn’t a generic small car. The engines, the electronics and the service procedures are specific to it, and so are the faults. A shop that sees one Cooper a month is learning on your car.
MINI/BMW-trained, ASE certified technicians
Our technicians are ASE certified and MINI/BMW trained — the same training the dealer’s technicians get, applied by people who have been doing this for over three decades.
Original MINI parts
We use only original MINI/BMW parts. Aftermarket substitutes are where a cheap repair turns into a repeat repair, particularly on cooling and timing components.
A 2-year, 24,000-mile warranty
Our work is backed by a 2-year, 24,000-mile warranty. If something we fixed doesn’t stay fixed, bring it back.
40% to 60% less than the dealer
On average we charge 40% to 60% less than the dealer, depending on the job. Same parts, same training, without the dealer’s overhead.

The MINIs we work on
First generation — R50, R52, R53 (2002–2006)
The supercharged Cooper S and the naturally aspirated Cooper. These cars are twenty years old now and their wear items are well established: electric power steering pump failure, water pump and thermostat leaks, and clutch wear on the manuals. The R53’s supercharger also needs its oil serviced, which a lot of owners don’t find out until it’s expensive. The CVT automatic deserves an honest conversation before money goes into it.
Second generation — R55, R56, R57 and Countryman (2007–2015)
The generation with the most known trouble spots. Cold-start timing chain rattle on the N12 and N14 engines. Carbon buildup on the intake valves of the direct-injected turbo cars, which no fuel additive will clear. High-pressure fuel pump failures. Thermostat housing and water pump leaks. Valve cover gasket oil leaks. Every one of these is fixable properly once — or expensively, over and over.
Third generation — F55, F56, F57, Clubman and Countryman (2014 on)
The three- and four-cylinder turbo cars. Newer, but not immune: coolant leaks, carbon buildup on the direct-injected engines, and turbo and timing components on the higher-mileage examples.
What we see most often
- A rattle on cold start. Usually the timing chain tensioner. This is the one not to wait on — a chain that jumps costs an engine.
- Rough running, misfires, poor throttle response. On direct-injected engines this is often carbon on the intake valves, and it has to be cleaned mechanically.
- A coolant smell, or coolant that keeps disappearing. The thermostat housings and water pumps on these engines are plastic, and they fail predictably.
- Oil on the driveway. Valve cover gasket and oil filter housing gasket are the usual two.
- A check engine light. We read the codes, then we test. A code tells you which circuit, not which part.
- Steering that has gone heavy. On R50 and R53 cars, that is normally the electric power steering pump.
What to expect
- Tell us what it’s doing. When it happens, what it sounds like, whether a light is on.
- We diagnose it. Codes first, then actual testing to confirm the cause rather than guessing at it.
- We give you the plan and the price. What needs doing now, what can wait, and what it costs. Nothing starts until you say so.
- We repair it and verify it. Then we road test the car before you get it back.

Frequently asked questions
Do you work on every MINI Cooper model?
Yes — Cooper, Cooper S, John Cooper Works, Clubman, Countryman, Convertible and Coupe, from the 2002 R50 through the current cars. We also specialize in BMW — see our BMW repair page.
Is an independent shop as good as the MINI dealer?
Our technicians are MINI/BMW trained and ASE certified, we use original MINI parts, and we warranty the work for 2 years or 24,000 miles. The difference is what it costs — on average 40% to 60% less than the dealer.
Do you use original MINI parts?
Yes. We use only original MINI/BMW parts.
My check engine light is on. Do I need to stop driving?
A steady light usually means you can drive it in to us. A flashing light means stop — that is an active misfire, and it can destroy the catalytic converter. Either way, call us on 626.963.6333.
Do you offer a warranty?
Yes. Our work is backed by a 2-year, 24,000-mile warranty.
How far will people drive to you?
Further than you would think. MINI and BMW specialists are thin on the ground in the San Gabriel Valley, and a lot of our customers pass three or four general shops on the way here.
Do I need an appointment?
Call 626.963.6333 or text 833.232.2847 during business hours and we’ll book you in.
Engine art from the same shop
We also run Car Guy Gift, where we sell exploded-engine blueprint posters and apparel — MINI and BMW engines among them. If you like what is under your hood, you can put it on a wall.
